Statement on Trump and Panama

The American Communist Party affirms its commitment to opposing any interference by the United States government in Latin America and in resolutely opposing U.S. imperialism against Latin America, including any and all schemes to infringe upon the sovereignty of Latin American countries.

The Party strongly condemns the recent aggressive statements made by President-elect Donald Trump against Panama.

It is clear that the American ruling capitalist class is attempting to embark upon a renewed campaign of aggression toward Latin America. From Elon Musk’s attempt to intervene in recent Venezuelan presidential elections to increasingly aggressive threats to invade Mexico, U.S. imperialism is being given an ideological make-over.

Since the presidency of Barack Obama, U.S. imperialism has disguised its agenda under the ‘progressive,’ ‘humanitarian,’ ‘liberal,’ and ‘woke’ pretext. Now, with the backing of Silicon Valley elites, the ideological pretext of U.S. hegemony is undergoing a reorientation, toward outward, shameless, and open militarist aggression and expansionism for the sake of naked self-interest.

The Party is following these developments very carefully. It has long been anticipated that the ruling class will find it necessary to adopt an openly neo-fascist orientation in order to salvage increasingly bankrupt U.S. imperialist hegemony.

This wanton, naked aggression which seeks to tramples underfoot the sovereignty of Latin American countries reflects the desperation of the global Atlanticist ruling classes amidst the economic and geopolitical ascendency of China, Russia, and other countries. It reflects an overall degenerate tendency of American-led global capitalism toward self-consuming madness and barbarism.

The Party will resolutely oppose and resist any attempt to infringe upon the sovereignty of Latin America. While the Party in principle supports the progressive tendency toward regional integration, pan-American integration is possible only on the basis of agreement between sovereign states and peoples.

With respect to the question of Trump’s comments on Canada and Greenland, the Party would like to direct special attention to the complexities surrounding this issue. Canada, a member of the British commonwealth, has long been a bulwark of Atlanticist reaction and has overall exercised a reactionary influence upon the development of the United States.

It has long been the aspiration of the American revolutionary tradition — as well as the view of Marx and Engels themselves — for Canada to be included in the United States as the final blow to British and European colonialism in North America.

However, it is necessary to consider carefully the conditions under which such an annexation would take place. Any violation of the sovereignty of any people anywhere by the U.S. regime, is simultaneously a violation of the sovereignty of the American people themselves. The same apparatuses of imperial and neo-colonial control, which bypass any democratic, constitutional, and sovereign legitimation, will and have inevitably been applied to the American people themselves.

The Party watches these developments closely and vigilantly and rejects any pretext whatsoever for the U.S. regime to expand its powers beyond those enumerated in the U.S. constitution.

On the other hand, under the circumstances in which Trump’s attempt to acquire Canada and Greenland (which is held by Denmark, a NATO member state) will deepen the rift between his administration and NATO, the Party remains open to the possibility that such developments may have a potentially progressive significance.

The Party lends its full support to the goal of a swift and complete exit of the United States from NATO.
